Australia Table Olive Imports 2002/2003

Table Olives

Commentary

Table olive imports also reached record levels in 2002/2003 with a total of 13,198 tonnes arriving in Australia with a customs value of over $39 million. The tonnage of table olives imported has therefore doubled over the last ten years.

Black olives dominated with 68% of imports with an average price of $2.95 per kilogram. Green olives averaged slightly higher at $3.13 per kilogram.

November and December 2003 showed a substantial increase of 1,249 tonnes over the same period in 2002. The percentage of black olives was up 5% compared with the same period the previous year but down approximately 8% on the previous year’s average. Prices of black olives were up 11.6% on the same period in 2002, probably reflecting the relatively small crop in Greece.
